Can I be charged an upfront fee for a new credit card? Is there a limit?

You can be charged upfront fees, such as an application or annual fee, but they can’t total more than 25 percent of the initial credit limit. For example, if your credit limit is $300, your first year’s fees can’t exceed $75. (This limit doesn’t include penalty or other fees you incur for such things as a late payment or a cash advance.)
